Hausa people love particiapating in sports and recreation. The most traditional sports are boxing and wrestling, however they do play basketball, soccer, tennis, pingpong and handball.
Wrestling usually takes place during harvest. Each city had a group of boys that are divided into three levels of wrestling, bag boys(smallest group), youth and the expierienced wrestlers. Along with the cities team they also have a drummer. They chose a family to feed each wrestler by dropping food off at their doorstep. On the day of the match the drummer beats his drum to call everyone the to match. Mats are spread out, not for the wrestlers, but for the elderly who will act as the refs. Then the drummer will beat his drum a different way for every class. When you hear your class called you walk into the arena. The wrestlers approach eachother with thier right hand raised with palms down and left hand lowered with plams up. If they slapl hands the challenge is accepted. For the most part they have sports like America. They have Nike and Adidias stores. Girls do not participate however.
